Choose a Publishing Label
Publishing Label Name
You will need to come up with a name for your publishing label or "publishing company."
For example, I use “dicegeeks” as you can see here on DriveThruRPG and of course my site dicegeeks.com.
This name will be used for accounts you create wherever you want to sell your books.
More importantly it this name that will become your brand and what your customers recognize when they see your work. Just like people recognize Wizards of the Coast or Paizo.
Think of something cool and memorable. Also, it should be unique. Give it some thought.
I chose dicegeeks because it sounded RPG-like and it was a short domain name that was available. Also, it would make sense if I wanted to sell dice or other RPG-related items.
Website or No?
Deciding on whether or not to have your own website is an important step in self-publishing.
If you want your own business you will need a website at some point. Don't worry about it too much at the start though.
The biggest consideration is to make sure you can get the domain name that matches your publishing label.
If you find a good domain name, you may want to register the domain now. However, if it is an obscure name you most likely do not have to worry about it being taken.
If you want to reserve your domain name now, simply do a Google search for a discount code. Godaddy offers a 99 cent deal, so you can get a domain for one dollar for one year.
To have your own website or not is totally dependent on your goals. If you are not sure if you want one just go over your goals and make them clear. Once you do that you will know what you need to do.
Also, you can begin self-publishing without your own website and simply create one later on down the road.
I'll provide more information on setting up a website in future emails.
Stay tuned, more self-publishing information is coming!
Keep Gaming!
