I put together a few short blog posts about some great RPG resources.
Practice, DMs need practice
In the abundance of dungeon master advice on the internet, people often forget to mention practice.
I've run a lot of games. I've been the pushover DM, the happy-go-lucky DM, the no-rules DM, the angry DM, the bitter DM, the sleepy DM, the too-easy DM, the follow-every-letter-in-the-rules DM, the unprepared DM, the overprepared DM, and occasionally the good DM.
I can draw on all those experiences every time I run a game. Without practice, I would never have learned the lessons I needed to become a consistently good DM. However, I still mess up and make mistakes.
Why? Because I'm still practicing and still learning.
The key takeaway is to practice being a DM. Get some reps in and learn from the experience.
