Newsletter Change - The Dicegeeks Insider
I’ve switched email platforms and renamed the newsletter. You may see some changes to the fonts and titles, but the transition should be smooth.
You can now go back and see all 417 previous newsletters including GM tips, RPG resources, and all my grammatical errors on full display. Also, you can share the newsletter easily with your friends which I would greatly appreciate.
Mastering the Game
I’m a huge fan of game masters filling themselves with stories so they have a catalog of situations to draw from during play. I made a recent video and an old blog post explaining what I mean. Heck, my whole podcast was founded on that idea.
Whether you are running fantasy, science fiction, or modern GMs can learn a lot from Westerns. It can be film, TV, or books as long as we think about the various elements that make up the story.
Westerns usually involve an evil person or group attempting to steal land or hoard resources (most likely water). Honest people ty to stand against them but lack fighting skills. That’s where the drifter with a heart of gold comes in or in our case where the D&D party comes in.
Only a bit of tweaking is needed to make western stories fit into D&D. As a bonus players love these kind of stories.
A couple of story hooks:
An evil wizard is using corrupt town officials to force a widow off her land.
Orphaned siblings are trying to save their family farm from a wicked blacksmith who knows there’s silver on their land.
