Space: 1999 - The TV Show
About 15 years ago, I watched the entire Space: 1999 series (1975–1977). I had heard about it for years, but this was my first chance to watch it.
The show is a wild ’70s trippy ride. WILD. TRIPPY. An explosion sends a piece of the Moon hurling through space. The people trapped on the Moon are thrown into exploring space—and the meaning of reality.
The show should really be split into two. The first season is packed with strange, philosophical episodes that are thought-provoking. The second season is a complete overhaul into a more action-adventure style, copying Star Trek.
The copying of Star Trek is an interesting development, since Gene Roddenberry was actually influenced by Space: 1999. This is evident in the look and feel of Star Trek: The Motion Picture—even the story. See: the gray uniforms, and a character becoming the avatar of a greater intelligence.
