EXODUS: WotC’s New Sci-Fi Video Game and TTRPG
Mass Effect! Baldur’s Gate 1&2! Chains of Asmodeus! And More!
Wizards of the Coast’s video game division, Archetype Entertainment, is not working on a D&D game. Instead, they have fully committed to a science fiction video game called EXODUS.
Now, WotC has announced that there will also be a tabletop role-playing game based on EXODUS. This is exciting because WotC has not released a new non-D&D role-playing game title in decades.
We don’t know much about the tabletop game yet, but information about the video game and its world is being released rapidly. Here’s what we know so far about the video game.
Lead Designer: James Ohlen
Vide game credits include: Baldur's Gate (1998), Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast (1999), Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (2000), Neverwinter Nights (2002), Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003), Dragon Age: Origins (2009), Star Wars: The Old Republic (2011), Mass Effect (2007), and more.
Plus D&D titles: Chains of Asmodeus, and Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy (5e)
Novel Set in the Game Universe
Exodus: The Archimedes Engine - “Explore EXODUS, a new sci-fi action-adventure RPG coming soon from Archetype Entertainment featured in this epic novel from legendary author Peter F. Hamilton.”
Time Dilation
Time dilation is a core mechanic of the game. It affects your character’s relationships with companions and has far-reaching consequences.
Starring Matthew McConaughey
Yes, Matthew McConaughey, the star of Interstellar, voices a main character in the video game.
Awakened Animals
The world includes at least uplifted bears and ravens, and I absolutely love this. I know uplifted animals were more of a '90s thing, but I still love them. I even included them in my own sci-fi novel.

Running Sci-Fi TTRPGs
With the impending release of EXODUS, both the TTRPG and the video game, interest in running science fiction campaigns will likely spike. I’ve run a lot of sci-fi in my time, and here are some my resources.

Animated D&D Show
Amazon Prime dropped an animated anthology series, Secret Level, based on video games this week. The first episode is Dungeons & Dragons: The Queen's Cradle.
Here’s the log line, “On the hunt for a dragon cult, a band of adventurers rescues a boy who’s haunted by a sinister force.”
The visuals and the voice work are outstanding. The story is fun and feels like a D&D session. It’s less than 16 minutes long, so it’s easy to watch.
